The Deer Sheath

This was my very first animal carving. I made this white tail deer sheath for a gentleman who had a beautiful carved one-of-a-kind knife. It has a lovely antler handle which inspired this carving.

I was very excited to make this sheath as it was my first ever animal carving. I opted for a half profile of the deer so that the face and antlers would fit nicely on the shape of the sheath. I was a little unsure whether or not I wanted to do a deer face or if I wanted to do a filigree that would match the guard.

I ultimately decided on the deer and am very happy with how it turned out! I dyed the main body in a saddle tan dye and the background in a dark brown dye. The deer is both dyed and painted.
